Abbott & Costello in Hollywood / Lost in a Harem

Buzz (Bud Abbott) and Abercrombie (Lou Costello) work in a Tinseltown haircut salon where they usually just take a little off the side. But why not take 10% off the top instead? So the fellas become movie talent agents, setting in motion the lights-camera-comedy antics of Abbott and Costello in Hollywood, including Costello being mistaken for a prop dummy during the filming of a saloon brawl, Bud and Lou coping with insomnia, and a pursuit finale in the cars and on the tracks of a roaring roller-coaster. You’ll also find Lost in a Harem. Locked in is more like it, as the two land in the hoosegow twice, where their timing, repartee and monkeyshines shine. Douglas Dumbrille plays the evil potentate who uses hypnosis against the boys ? making this a tale of Arabian daze and nights. The grand wazir orders you to watch!

It Ain’t Hay (Universal Vault Series)

Comedy legends Bud Abbott and Lou Costello gallop their way to the racetrack in It Ain’t Hay – a rare, early film based on a short story by Damon Runyon. When a taxi driver (Costello) unwittingly kills a carriage driver’s elderly horse, he and his pal (Abbott) attempt to replace it by “borrowing” the famous racehorse Tea Biscuit. A reward for the stolen animal is announced, shifty Broadway locals, such as Umbrella Sam and Chauncey the Eye get involved, and the duo trots from one hilarious situation to another. The stakes are high in this comedy favorite that features classic routines including “Mudder/Fodder” and “Betting Parlor”.

Abbott & Costello Meet Captain Kidd [Remaster]

Abbott. Costello. Laughton. Three stars boasting one Oscar(r) between them deliver the yo-ho-ho-ho-ing of this merry musical-comedy tale of pirates and buried treasure. Casting an acclaimed actor renowned for gravitas in a knockabout romp may seem unusual. Yet Academy Award(r) winner* Charles Laughton, who portrayed menacing Captain Bligh in Mutiny on the Bounty and the title role in the swashbuckling adventure Captain Kidd, sails into this sea of silliness with great glee. Instigators of most of that silliness are, of course, the legendary Bud and Lou, turning the voyage under the Jolly Roger into a jollier one with their comic timing, verbal jousts and madcap mayhem. Arrrrrr you ready?
